What is it about?

We aimed to create an innovative, interactive social media poll competition, which would encourage young people to engage in a fun online activity. Our objective was to increase our followers and reach more young people, providing access to information on EU opportunities and programmes such as ESC and DiscoverEU.

We ran the poll competition for the first time during both the European Youth Week (EYW) and the Time to Move campaign. The competition was designed to encourage young people to follow, share, and answer the polls. By answering the polls, young people could share their opinions, feel heard, and see how their answers impacted the overall poll results, demonstrating democracy in action. We included links in each poll so followers could use them to browse information relevant to the question being asked, e.g.,

Question: If 18, are you registered to vote? Yes/No
Link: [How to register to vote (check the register)]

Question: Would you study in another EU country if you didn’t have to pay tuition fees? Yes/No
Link: [Study in another EU country]

We created poll questions related to the themes of EYW, “Voice your Vision” (Democracy in Action), and TTM, “Discover ways to explore Europe”. We hoped this new, creative way of raising awareness of European opportunities would empower young people to become active citizens and vote in the upcoming European elections.

We aimed to reach disadvantaged and hard-to-reach young people who may not otherwise have accessed information on European opportunities. We used Eurodesk EYW and Time To Move logos, hashtags, and created colourful social media graphics for each poll. We designed and printed poll competition posters which were displayed in the Youth Information windows, the centre, and distributed throughout our youth service. Announcements and photos of prize winners were posted and shared on social media.

How is this project relevant to the specific category?

We created the poll competition to be inclusive and accessible to all young people, regardless of their location, ability, or education. We achieved this by using Instagram to reach young people online. We encouraged young people to take part by offering a chance to win a Road Trip Goodie Bag. We made sure we had clear and simple rules on how to enter the competition, which were: Answer the daily poll question, follow, and share.

There were no wrong answers as winners were selected based on the level of interaction and engagement. Competition winners were announced on Instagram at the end of the EYW and TTM campaigns. This new online innovation raised awareness of European opportunities open to young people. We informed and empowered young people to participate in EU programmes and become active citizens.

What was the impact of the project?

We were really happy with the outcome of the competition. The online poll competitions were very popular with new and existing Instagram followers. Many poll results showed young people did not know about the information being asked of them, e.g., “Have you heard of DiscoverEU? Yes/No.” 47% said Yes, and 53% said No. Using the links provided in each poll, young people could learn about the question being asked, e.g., about DiscoverEU.

Young people now know where to come for information on European opportunities and are encouraged to participate in these opportunities. EYW and TTM poll results are saved to Instagram highlights, creating an information resource for young people for future reference and information.

Winners were announced on Instagram, with prize giving and photos posted on social media for friends and family to see their achievements.

Did the project have any green focus?

As part of a greener approach, the creative online competition promoted eco-friendly learning by reducing paper use and minimising energy consumption, empowering individuals to contribute to a greener future.
